Memorial
A Tribute to the Wrongly Deceased
Every year, a memorial is held at the Lady of Fatima Church in Brentwood Park, Benoni, in honour of the victims of crime in the Portuguese Community. This massive marble monument is already almost completely covered with the faces and names of those that were taken away from their loved ones too early. Up to date, there are 402 names engraved on the monument.
This structure was an initiative of the Portuguese Forum which was established in June 2001, and the first memorial service took place the very same month. The monument was built and installed in 2001 thanks to funding provided by the Forum. This funding was remaining funds from the March Against Crime that took place the year before. The actual building of the structure was donated by Mannys Timber and Hardware, today known as Mannys Build It.
The cross situated on top of the monument is the same cross used and carried on the frontlines of the memorable march against crime in front of the Union Buildings in Pretoria in 2001.
