APKZN – Christmas Lunch

The board of the Portuguese Benevolent Society of KwaZulu Natal Trust, composed of several members of the local community, once again organised the annual Christmas lunch, which was attended by over forty people. Guests enjoyed a meal showcasing traditional Portuguese cuisine.

The lunch was held at the restaurant of the Portuguese Association of KwaZulu Natal, where round tables were beautifully decorated, complete with a Christmas tree adorned with festive ornaments, creating a warm and celebratory atmosphere.

This annual initiative strengthens community bonds and reflects the spirit of solidarity, emphasising the importance of celebrating the festive season with those who often face challenges such as social isolation or other issues associated with ageing.

Before dessert was served, including pudding and cakes lovingly prepared by Portuguese ladies, the President of the Benevolent Society, Luísa Serrão, welcomed the guests and expressed gratitude for their presence. She extended special thanks to the APKZN board members and the restaurant staff, with particular appreciation for Ana Barbosa’s contributions to organising monthly lunches, especially this festive gathering.

She concluded by announcing that the ladies would receive vouchers to purchase essential items and wished everyone a Merry Christmas and a New Year filled with health, peace, and joy.

To close the event, the Honorary Consul of Portugal in Durban, João de Gouveia, addressed the attendees. He expressed appreciation for the gathering, highlighting that it serves as a gesture of recognition and gratitude for the vital contributions of seniors to the community. He emphasised the importance of honouring their wisdom, experience, and resilience, ensuring they feel valued and loved not just during the festive season but throughout the year.

The event ended with warm wishes for a Christmas filled with joy and a New Year of good health, peace, and happiness.

Additionally, on 31 December 2024, the Portuguese Association of KwaZulu Natal hosted a dinner dance, with music provided by DJ Theo, bringing the year to a lively and joyous close.
