Local Inspiration: The Manager Who Blends Passion and Purpose

In the bustling aisles of Bedfordview Spar, José Luís da Silva is more than just a manager. With a warm demeanour and deep faith, José embodies resilience and dedication—qualities that extend beyond his career in retail.

Born on 28 April 1976 in Nigel, José grew up in a family of hardworking takeaway business owners. “My parents faced many challenges, including attacks on their businesses,” he recalls. Despite setbacks, José’s journey led him to Springs, where he explored technical studies and eventually entered the retail industry.

For 11 years, José has managed Bedfordview Spar under the SGC Group, earning respect for his humble approach to customers and staff. “I treat everyone with respect, from the owner to the cleaner,” he says.

Yet retail isn’t José’s true passion. A talented artist since his youth, his love for drawing was rekindled by his children, who often request artwork of their favourite superheroes. Inspired by their enthusiasm, José began exploring his artistic talents again, taking advice from Marvel artist Lee Weeks to “draw, draw, draw.”

José now dreams of launching a Christian clothing brand featuring messages of faith and hope. “Even if I can’t speak to everyone, a T-shirt can carry God’s message,” he says. The idea was born during a period of prayer, when José envisioned a logo featuring a shield and sword.

Balancing long hours in retail and family life has made pursuing this dream challenging, but José remains determined. “My goal isn’t to grow a brand for myself but to spread God’s word,” he explains.

For now, José continues to inspire others through his faith, art, and leadership at Bedfordview Spar. His journey is a testament to perseverance and purpose, with a vision that promises to leave a lasting impact.
