Christmas in the West Rand

As reported by Voz Portuguesa in the final month of the year, the West Rand Club, which meets monthly on the second Wednesday of each month, held its Christmas party on December 7th for underprivileged children, many of whom live in care institutions.

On that Saturday morning, 200 children, along with their caregivers, followed “a star” to the hall of the Portuguese Club in West Rand. They were not there to receive gold, myrrh, or frankincense like the gifts offered by the Three Wise Men—Melchior, Balthazar, and Gaspar—to Baby Jesus in the manger, but rather to receive presents from Father Christmas. The children also enjoyed a festive snack provided by many generous “wise men,” including friends and family members.

Everything was thoughtfully arranged to bring joy and entertainment to the children. The snack featured treats that delighted the little ones, including ice cream and other sweets that many rarely get the chance to enjoy.

The organisers, supported by their families, managed the logistics and kept the children entertained without the usual hustle and bustle typical of their age.

When it was time to hand out gifts, each child received a backpack filled with school supplies, including notebooks, pencils, coloured pencils, pens, and some toys and games. Additionally, each child took home a hamper with a variety of food items and special treats to make their Christmas a bit sweeter and more comforting.

The organisers, through Paulo Freitas, extended heartfelt thanks to all sponsors, collaborators, and friends who made it possible to provide a few hours of happiness and joy to the 200 children and their caregivers (representatives of the care institutions). Without everyone’s support, the effort would have been much more challenging.
