Portuguese Friends JHB

As the years go by, December becomes a time of gatherings and celebrations. Christmas parties for companies, associations, clubs, organisations, and groups bring together people of all ages. Some of these events are opportunities to distribute goods or funds raised throughout the year at weekly or monthly meetings.

In December, these gatherings range from charitable initiatives to casual social events, uniting groups dedicated to being on the front line of support throughout the year. Whether helping organisations, charities, or individuals, Amigos Portugueses is one such group.

On Sunday, 8 December, the feast day of Portugal’s patron saint, Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, these “knights,” mounted on their gleaming Harley Davidsons, embarked on a leisurely ride before gathering in Brakpan to celebrate Christmas and the end of another year with friends and family.

This group of motorcycle enthusiasts began in Cape Town with just two or three friends meeting on Sundays for breakfast rides. Over time, others joined, and the Amigos Portugueses was officially born.

The group has since grown beyond borders, earning the title of an “international” club. From Mozambique to Portugal (including Madeira and the mainland), the group is thriving. After Cape Town, the first branch was established in Johannesburg, which now has 40 members. To join, one must be Portuguese (or married to a Portuguese person) and own a “steed” – a Harley Davidson.

The Amigos Portugueses meet weekly for traditional breakfasts, organise extended rides across provinces, and participate in events such as the annual Cancer Walk organised by the Shuffling Walking Team, where they act as marshals and honour guards.

Throughout the year, this group has quietly provided assistance to many in need, embodying their motto: “Do with one hand so the other doesn’t know.” For them, the true spirit of Christmas is to be lived year-round, as challenges and hardships can arise at any time.

The Amigos Portugueses aim to continue growing, both in numbers and in their participation in meaningful activities.
