The vibrant energy of Germiston has found a new creative outlet at Sandelani Authentic Portuguese Restaurant. Thanks to local self-taught artist Donné Thorns, art enthusiasts and novices alike are discovering the joy of painting in a relaxed and inspiring environment.
Donné, a retired artist with a passion for bringing creativity to the community, started hosting painting workshops a year ago to address the lack of leisure activities in Germiston. “Art benefits people in so many ways,” she explains. “It helps them de-stress, reset their minds, and discover new perspectives. It’s a healthy and healing activity for all ages.”
This year, the workshops found a new home at Sandelani Restaurant, located at 2 Nasmith Avenue, Driehoek, Germiston. After a chance meeting with Manuela Cardoso, the wife of Sandelani’s owner Jorge Cardoso, the idea to bring art and dining together was born.
The first art afternoon at Sandelani was held on Saturday, 6 December, in the restaurant’s beautifully decorated, air-conditioned upstairs area. Guests were greeted with the warm tones of Portuguese music and an inviting atmosphere. The restaurant offered a special menu for the event, though participants were free to order from the regular menu as well.
Each participant was given a choice of pre-drawn canvases and a full set of materials, all provided by Donné. Walk-ins were also welcome, adding an impromptu charm to the gathering. “I guide everyone through the techniques and encourage them throughout the session,” says Donné. “It’s about building confidence and showing people that they can create something beautiful.”
The event lasted about three hours, including a break for food, drinks, and camaraderie. By the end of the afternoon, participants proudly displayed their completed masterpieces, many surprised by their own artistic abilities.
Donné’s positive energy and individual attention to each participant have quickly turned these afternoons into a much-anticipated event. The first session was toasted with the hope of making it a regular feature in Germiston’s social calendar.

Art afternoons at Sandelani are not just about painting; they are about community, connection, and discovering hidden talents. With weekly advertising on WhatsApp and Facebook, Donné and the Cardosos hope to attract even more people to join in the fun and enjoy Sandelani’s welcoming hospitality.
Whether you’re an experienced artist or someone who’s never picked up a brush, these art afternoons offer an opportunity to unwind, create, and share in the joy of art. Donné sums it up best: “Everyone leaves feeling good about themselves, with new skills, and a wonderful experience to remember.”
For those looking to add a splash of colour to their weekends, Sandelani’s art afternoons promise a creative escape you won’t want to miss.
