O duelo entre as equipas vencedoras das últimas edições da UEFA Youth League e da Libertadores sub-20 não foi sempre bem jogado, mas não lhe faltou intensidade, sobretudo na segunda parte.
O Peñarol teve o ascendente do jogo nos 45 minutos iniciais, mas não conseguiram criar muito perigo junto da baliza de Samuel Soares.
No regresso dos balneários, os comandados de Luís Castro equilibraram o jogo e aos 65 minutos João Resende ainda acertou no ferro numa transição rápida das águias.
O momento-chave do jogo chegaria pouco depois. Lançado no jogo escassos minutos antes, Luís Semedo desviou ao segundo poste após um canto cobrado por Cher N’Dour, fazendo aquele que seria o único golo do jogo.
Após o golo sofrido, os uruguaios lançaram-se em busca do golo que levasse o jogo para o desempate por penáltis, mas a consistência defensiva e a inspiração de Samuel Soares seguraram a vantagem das águias, juntam ao título europeu o troféu da Taça Intercontinental.
